Abstract

This article examines liberal Muslims in Germany based on interviews with members of the Liberal-Islamic Federation at various locations. Its aim is to open up a field of Muslim self-understandings that has so far received little scholarly attention. Using Grounded Theory, the study analyzes how liberal Muslims define themselves, what meanings they attribute to the term ›liberal‹, and how a liberal understanding of Islam develops.
